One more men’s dorm left to go. It was time to write on the elusive 5B, as led by counselor Reese Zoellner and assistant Kaleb Robson. My nose led me to the swimming pool (actually, the pyc schedule did), and there I found them, congregated amongst the ranks of 4B. I entered through the large mesh gate into the natatory compound, complete with background reggae fusion music emanating from water polo instructor Kyle Cocomise’s cacophonous stereo set.
Today was going to be a water polo game. Ironically, while this was the last water polo class for 5B, they were still yet to have their first swimming instructional class. I guess swimming is not considered a critical element for water polo. Nevertheless, 5B managed to keep their heads up—and quite well, as the results of the subsequent game would prove!
5B’s counselor, ac junior Zoellner, was happy with his dorm. “We are very decent athletically,” and “work well as a team,” he said. Their results in the pool were certainly confirming that. 5B had taken the lead, 6 points to 3. And it was only up from there. 5B goalie Jed repelled shot after shot, and the offense was making brilliant headway. A score of 8-4 left the game at halftime.
The second half began, and the campers dived back in, relieved to get off the scalding concrete platform. 5B picked up where they had left off, and almost instantly, Daniel had collected the ball and drilled it into 4B’s goal. It wasn’t long before instructor Cocomise tore off his shirt, handed his timer over to water polo assistant Brandi Davis, and jumped into the water to help 4B out, quickly securing them a goal with a brilliant bounce shot from halfway. Cocomise later secured another goal for 4B—but it wasn’t enough, and the teamwork and skill of 5B led them to victory, with a final score of 12 to 6.
With the campers standing on the pool’s edge, the water polo staff cued the music, and began pushing them back into the pool to a thunderous orchestration of Pirates of the Caribbean in a unique ticket-giving ritual. Ticket safely pocketed by indomitable goalie Jed, 5B gathered around to cheer for their worthy opponents. Then they hit the changing rooms to don more appropriate clothing for their final activity of the day: soccer!
