New Singles Booklet Released
Single-Minded for God available online, in print

EDMOND—Single-Minded for God was uploaded onto the Philadelphia Church of God literature library by the online marketing department on April 8. The booklet offers guidance to readers who are not married and encourages them to thrive as singles.

The new 106-page booklet includes instruction about the role of a single, godly dating, marriage preparation, and a secret to being a happy single. The preface directs singles to look to Jesus Christ as their perfect example and says that physical marriage is not a prerequisite to serving God. The first chapter describes how a single should grow spiritually, help others, and support God’s Work. The second chapter dwells on relating with others and dating in a godly way. The third chapter addresses how to prepare spiritually for marriage and what to look for in a potential spouse. The fourth chapter examines how to succeed as a single parent. The epilogue dwells on the value of godly contentment. Single-Minded for God is a compilation of 43 articles from the Philadelphia Church of God and from the Worldwide Church of God during the 1980s. It also contains contributions from pcg lay members.

“There are wonderful nuggets of wisdom in there from Mr. Armstrong and Mr. Flurry, along with several other writers that were scattered throughout various books, booklets and articles,” Pastor Joel Hilliker said. “It’s great to have it all under one cover.”

Wisconsin single Nick Bush said he learned from the booklet that, “God the Father sees every person in His Church as a perfect marriage companion for His Son, despite their flaws and inadequacies.”

He said the he enjoyed the article “The Invisible Singles,” because it helped him improve in dating widely

Edmond single Daniel Westerbaan said that the article “Overcoming Fear” particularly stood out to him.

“It really brings out the importance of John 4:18, that there is no fear in love,” he said.

The booklet, which 181 singles received during the Singles Winter Weekend in January, is the updated version of one that was handed out at the 2013 singles weekend. The updated booklet includes 24 pages of new material, mainly in the marriage preparation section.

The booklet is the latest step in a continuing effort to increase support for pcg singles, who make up about one third of the Church’s membership. Mr. Hilliker said that he began posting and promoting singles-specific content on pcog.org in early 2013 in order to help singles overcome difficulties such as isolation and negative influences. That June, he gave the first in a continuing series of online singles Bible studies. The online singles directory went online at the same time, enabling scattered pcg singles to get in touch with each other.

“I hope every single in God’s Church will get this booklet and read it and apply it—that’s the really important part,” Mr. Hilliker said. “Every one of them that puts forth the effort is going to help build the right kind of singles culture in God’s Church. The more who do, the more wonderful and unique and godly it will become.”

The booklet is available in pdf, Kindle and ePub formats at pcog.org. A physical copy can be ordered through the pcg literature request line (1-800-772-8577).
