What Can You See?

The human eye is amazing. After the brain, it is the most complicated organ in the human body. More than 50 percent of brain function is devoted to eyesight, and on average, our eyes focus 50 times per second. Their muscles are rapid—far quicker than any camera lens made by men. In just an hour, our eyes absorb 36,000 bits of information. We can also see around 10 million distinct colors.

Yet as remarkable as that is, we only see 0.0035 percent of the electromagnetic spectrum—meaning the light we see is far less than 1 percent of all light waves in God’s creation. This seems extremely limited. But it raises the question: How much spiritual sight do we have?

As we study God’s creation, we learn intricate details about the way God thinks, what He loves, and how He works. The Apostle Paul tells us this in his epistle to the church in Rome (Romans 1:20). He also wrote that “we see through a glass, darkly,” but in time, God will clear the spiritual fog (1 Corinthians 13:9-12). We do not now know and see all that God does.

“He doesn’t reveal everything to us,” writes Gerald Flurry. “We are given all of the essential truth, but some knowledge would not be good for us at this time” (Prophesy Again). This is both humbling and exciting. Our spiritual sight, like our physical sight, is limited. Yet if God’s Spirit is working in us, our spiritual sight is far more than what this world has (1 Corinthians 2:9-10).

Our physical eyes see a mere sliver of the vast amount of light waves God has created. With scientific instruments, we can see what many of these light waves would look like if our eyes could detect them (such as infrared or ultraviolet light). Still, there is much we do not know conclusively about what it would be like to see the other segments of the electromagnetic spectrum.

One day, as God beings, that physical limitation will be lifted, and we will see dramatically more than we do today. For now, what God has made us to see is all we need to see. You could call it our “Goldilocks vision.” We see just the right segment of the electromagnetic spectrum to appreciate the beauty of God’s creation. Creation would not likely be so beautiful if we were limited to any other light waves on the spectrum.

“God knows what to reveal to us and what to withhold for the time being—and what He withholds can be astounding!” Mr. Flurry continues. “Just imagine what God may still have to reveal to us when the time is right!”

Just imagine! We will one day be able to see all the light waves of His creation. But for now, what God has made us to see is “very good” (Genesis 1:31). In the same way, we will one day be able to see all of God’s awesome spiritual plans for us, the world, the universe and beyond. In a sense, He is already advancing our spiritual sight and giving us opportunity to see a little more each year. But as Mr. Flurry wrote, it is riveting to consider what God will reveal to us in the near future—when the time is perfectly right.
