TEXAS—Philadelphia Church of God members from the Mt. Pleasant congregation donned boots, hats and western garb on February 25 for a family square dance at a winter social event. Of the 75 members who attended the event, more than 35 of all ages participated in the dance, getting instructions from a professional square dance caller.
During the square dance, member Gerald Beshirs’s footwork encouraged more people to join the dancing and share the laughter. The square dance came at the heels of a Sabbath Tex-Mex potluck topped off by pies made for the “Best Texas Pie Contest.” Four judges tasted over 20 pies to determine the winners, with Coleen Grenchick’s spicy pecan pie placing first, followed by Steve Madderra with a cherry cheesecake dump-cake pie and Kelly Ann Havens with a cherry crumb pie.
One judge said, “It’s a tough job judging all those pies, but someone has to do it.”
