SOUTH AFRICA—Regional Director for Australasia and Africa Mr. Alex Harrison and his wife landed in Johannesburg, South Africa, on August 13 for what was a busy and productive week. They spent the first 4 days visiting members in the Johannesburg area.
On Friday, August 17, deacons and elders in the region of Africa and their wives arrived for a DEL’s weekend. After the Sabbath, the deacons and elders enjoyed a wonderful Saturday evening of food and fellowship at a Bring and Braai event.
On Sunday morning, the one-and-a-half-day long Deacons and Elders meeting commenced with Mr. Harrison delivering lectures on various subjects, including leadership, marriage hospitality and the critical importance of daily good inspiring and uplifting Bible study. He reminded the deacons and elders that the best way to lead is by example. Among other things, he outlined 3 foundational points on how to become a great leader in God’s Church:
- Genuine love for people
- Love for the brethren
- Spending time with the brethren
The DELs meeting concluded on Monday afternoon with two lectures in which Mr. Harrison reminded the deacons and elders that, as leaders, they need to be tender-hearted, encouraging to the brethren, and developing a spirit of selfless service. He concluded the meeting with the following words, “The responsibility is from God to look after His people. There is a lot of work to be done!”
