For the fifth consecutive year, Philadelphia Church of God members volunteered at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway to raise money for congregational activity funds.
Regional pcg members from the Eastern United States volunteered to staff two summer Sunday race events. Each time, the Indianapolis congregation prepared dinner for visitors on Saturday night. Local brethren also hosted many of the visitors in their homes each weekend.
On May 28 at 3a.m., 78 pcg volunteers, including Eastern United States Regional Director Cal Culpepper, began 12-hour shifts primarily as ticket takers for approximately 30,000 fans at the world-famous Indianapolis 500.
On July 22, 67 pcg volunteers helped serve 35,000 guests at the Brickyard 400. Intermittent rain showers delayed but didn’t prevent the race.
Many of the pcg volunteers were senior citizens. Bruce Johnston, age 75, traveled five hours from Utica, Michigan, to work both events. “It’s part of supporting the work, and it is also great fellowship,” he said. “The people in the congregation who open their homes are what make it all click. It’s a unity thing.”
Anthony Hawkins, age 71, traveled a similar distance from Detroit for both races. “It’s nice to get to know brethren you haven’t met before by staying in their homes,” he said. “It was long hours, but I really enjoyed it. I plan to do it every time if I have the opportunity.”
The two Speedway fundraisers netted a total of $13,286 for the activity funds of the participating congregations.
