ARIZONA—About 40 members raced pine cars in Phoenix on Saturday evening, January 7, during the second-annual Arizona Pine Car Derby. Nearly 100 cars entered the race, including the previous year’s winners, improved contenders, and brand-new challengers.
After sunset, members transformed the meeting hall into a scene reminiscent of a small nascar event. Some members even changed into racing outfits.
Participants remarked that the event encapsulated the spirit of sportsmanlike, Philadelphian competition. “It is so great,” youth Kaelyn Alvord said. “I don’t even care who wins.”
“There was a lot of enthusiasm, creativity and effort in building the cars,” member Rosa Michaels said. “It was exciting and the best pine car derby ever. We’re ready for the next one!”
