SOUTH AFRICA—Forty-eight members of the Johannesburg congregation of the Philadelphia Church of God, along with guests from Botswana, Durban and Australia, built pyramids together in a family activity at Delta Park on Nov. 29, 2015.

The congregation was divided into four teams, each receiving 400 cans to build a pyramid within 20 minutes.

Youth Krystal Lightfoot said the challenge “tested our teamwork up to the limits, but it was an exciting activity with ideas and laughter from everyone.”

After 20 minutes, only two pyramids stood; a winning team was announced by Assistant Pastor for Africa George Githembe and local member Gregory Lightfoot.

Just as visiting Durban member Michael Pye and his team placed the last few cans on their pyramid, Lightfoot gave the signal to stop building, and their pyramid fell.

“[O]ur pyramid started to topple like the walls of Jericho and came tumbling down!” Pye said. “However, despite the disappointment, the team was still in good spirits.”

The men then collected the cans and compressed them using tree stumps, hammers and even an SUV. The cans recycled the next day as part of a fundraising initiative, resulting in $41.24 to put toward the Church’s work.

After the picnic, children and adults had some fun playing ball in the sun.

“The family social provided a wonderful opportunity to support God’s Work,” member Trevor Laubscher said, “and enhance unity among God’s people through a fun-filled team-building activity and lovely picnic.”
