SOUTH AFRICA—The sound of 160cc engines mixed with the chatter of Johannesburg singles on February 16 as they gathered for their first singles activity of the year: go-kart racing. The singles were joined by Local Elder George Githembe and his family, along with another family and one teenager.

Some of those unfamiliar with the sport said the idea of speeding at almost 40 mph on a motorized cart was somewhat daunting. But everyone participated, dividing into five teams of three to compete in an endurance race.

The sound of idling engines and beautiful skies above provided the setting. With the racetrack to themselves, competitors donned helmets and strapped in.

3 … 2 … 1 … Go!

The first five drivers sped off, aiming to achieve the most laps for their teams. Excitement was visible on the racers’ faces, especially the more senior singles, as adrenaline surged to the roar of accelerating engines. The high-octane atmosphere was punctuated by singles cheering on the sidelines.

“It was fun, exciting, and the teams competed in a wonderful spirit,” Trevor Laubscher commented.

“The track curves were my favorite,” Otto Trietsch, who was full of enthusiasm for the race, said. “It required the perfect touch of acceleration and brake.”

“Despite the noticeable age differences among singles participating in the endurance race, everyone seemed to enjoy a comparatively fast-paced activity,” event co-coordinator Divan Muller said. “The track was easy enough for those who had never driven a go-kart, yet challenging enough to test the skills of more experienced drivers. Dividing the singles into teams worked well, as it helped build camaraderie.”

“Today was a day not to be forgotten—especially for the ‘first timers,’” Jeni Seller, one of the more senior singles said. “It was blessed family time that only the ‘Phillies’ know how to enjoy.”

In the end, the red team won by one lap, claiming victory and winning some biltong (similar to beef jerky). After the last go-kart pulled to a halt and the exhilaration subsided, the racers cooled down with refreshing fruit juices and layered cheese pizza.

Senior Sarie Van Niekerk, a first-time go-kart driver, enjoyed the race so much that she asked Mr. Githembe whether go-karting could be scheduled as a senior activity.

Mr. Githembe asked staff members whether they offered senior discounts. They responded that they hardly ever have senior racers, but would consider it. Staff members were so impressed by the group’s team spirit, they took a photograph of the group for their website.
