FLORIDA—Approximately 29 members from three congregations gathered on August 31 for their annual picnic at Florida Caverns State Park in Marianna. The park is home to open-air cave tours and other activities, including picnicking, camping, canoe rentals, nature trails, swimming and horse trails.
The event began at 10 a.m. under the Sweet Gum Shelter in a secluded, shady nook of trees. The spot provided plenty of space for activities such as bocce ball, badminton, Jenga or a stroll along the nature trails.
Preaching Elder John Cocomise and members Clay Smedley, Larry and Aaron Stewart grilled the meat, which was served with side dishes, drinks and desserts.
Games and conversation continued well into the afternoon. The shade and breeze provided comfort as the temperature climbed into the low 90s. As usual, summertime in the South also means plenty of insects.
“The gnats were terrible, but they didn’t take away from the spiritual blessing we enjoyed,” member Pam Shirk said.
Member Brandy MacDonald said she enjoyed helping the children play bocce ball and badminton.
“They were just like your shadow—right there with you,” she said. “They needed instruction, but weren’t too concerned with competition; they were just happy to hit [the ball].”
As members prepared for departure around 4 p.m., single Cord Smedley treated the children to a car ride around the park.
