OREGON—The Wilsonville congregation is into its seventh year fundraising at the Portland Rose Quarter venue. The congregation’s 30-member team, under the direction of Robert and Kristina Brown, primarily sells drinks and hot dogs, as well as other foodstuffs from a concession stand at sporting events.
“We are setting the Philadelphian standard, and it’s getting noticed,” volunteer Hilary Young said. “Customers notice our group is different. Rose Quarter staff notice too because we leave things better than we find them, we are patient, and eager to help.”
The fundraising venture was initially started to raise funds for the construction of Armstrong Auditorium, and now continues to contribute to the local church account.
“This fundraiser is all about building,” Local Church Elder Darren Verbout said. “[It’s about] building God’s house, building family unity in God’s Church, community awareness and godly character.”
Long-time volunteer Beth Bruce said her favorite memory was from the first night: “As the stand opened and we made our first sales, it was so exciting,” she said. “We said to each other, ‘There’s another brick for God’s house!’ and that has been on my mind ever since.”
“It’s a rare opportunity to work with brethren in a real-work situation,” deacon Bruce Young said. “[It’s] not just fellowship, but learning how to work together effectively, exercising patience, breaking down barriers, and building the bonds of family.”
