A couple weeks ago, I asked to hear from you. And wow—did I ever hear from you!
I received e-mails from more than 80 of you. Not just “Hey, how’s it going” e-mails. Detailed, sincere, honest, emotive, thought-provoking, powerful, sad, inspiring messages from your heart.
Thank you. It has been very moving to read what is on your minds.
You definitely stirred me to take some action. We in the ministry and in Editorial have been discussing several ways we may be able to provide help, encouragement and instruction, and even to open up more opportunities for fellowship among the singles in God’s Church.
The first thing we plan to do, you are reading right now. This is the very first of a new column we will run on pcog.org, called “Single Serving.”
One obvious point that emerged from your e-mails is that a lot of the instruction on dating and preparing for marriage that we give to students of Herbert W. Armstrong College isn’t making it out to singles elsewhere. Considering the amount of confusion in this world caused by improper dating, anti-family messages and ignorance of sex roles, the need for regular articles aimed right at singles is clear.
This column is intended to provide sound, sensible, practical, Bible-based teaching especially for you: about understanding the opposite sex; establishing quality friendships with both sexes; minimizing the problems of having few people to date; what to do—and what not to do—on a date; steps you can take to be better prepared for marriage, and so on.
I already have ideas for about 10 articles myself, and other ministers have already volunteered to contribute as well.
In addition, we’d like to keep the conversation going by featuring occasional articles from you. Based on the mountain of eloquent and thoughtful e-mails I received, I can tell you that we have quite a few accomplished writers among our singles. One of the most popular features we’ve had in True Education over the years is “Your Turn,” where one of our young readers shares an experience and a lesson. If you would like to contribute an article you believe would be beneficial for other singles in the Church, please send it in to me for consideration.
We are currently redesigning the pcog.org website to make it far more inviting and useful. We plan to include a special section for singles, just like the current site has a place for youth. We are discussing possibilities for what all can go up on that section. Although we’re not sure how long it will take for us to make that new website fully functional, we can start posting material for singles on the current website right away, just like the article you’re reading.
We are looking into the possibility of being able to post videos of singles Bible studies at headquarters and make them accessible to you around the world.
We also plan to assemble some of the best information from these columns and from Armstrong College lectures, and put together a new booklet about dating and single life.
We are discussing still more plans and hope to let you know more in the weeks ahead.
In the meantime, keep the conversation going in the comments box and in your e-mails to joelh@pcog.org!
