Armstrong Auditorium Hosts Jazz Concert

EDMOND—On February 2, the Armstrong International Cultural Foundation hosted its second concert of the calendar year, “Mark Jenkins and Friends—A Salute to Ellis Marsalis.” The two-hour performance was attended by exactly 200 patrons, with 51 purchasing tickets online to watch the live stream.

The concert featured Mark Jenkins, a pianist, singer, composer, arranger and staff member in the music department of the Philadelphia Church of God, which sponsors the foundation. He has performed at Armstrong Auditorium with Branford Marsalis. Jenkins was joined by an acclaimed Oklahoma musicians: Floyd Haynes on clarinet and saxophone, Zac Lee on trombone, Vince Norman on saxophone, Jemar Poteat on drums, Raul Reyes on double bass and Jay Wilkinson on trumpet.

The performers played jazz favorites including “Take the A Train,” “Linus and Lucy” and “The Very Thought of You.” Many of the pieces were written by the late Ellis Marsalis. The Armstrong International Cultural Foundation hosts its next concert, “Cellist Sara Sant’ambrogio,” on April 8.
