SOUTH AFRICA—On Dec. 30, 2014, children and parents of the Johannesburg congregation gathered at the Go Ape South Africa aerial forest park for a children’s adventure activity.

Instructors first taught the children how to use safety hooks, which attached to the zip-line cables to move them safely from one platform to the next. After being fastened with safety harnesses and zip-line reels, seven girls and two boys took off.

This activity exercised the children’s hand-eye coordination while prompting laughter and encouragement from friends. Obstacles included a spider web, swinging logs, tunnels and walking the line (cable). The youths said the 10-to-20 meter-long zip lines were a highlight of the day.

“Today was an exciting day, but the scary part was when I had to hold onto a wire and step on another wire,” 10-year-old Eden Smith said.

Paula Githembe was the youngest girl, 5 years old, but she was first in line for the course. “I liked the zip-line … nothing was scary,” she said.

By early afternoon, the children were ready for lunch. Though the activity was over, most said they were willing to return someday to try the next level.

Assistant Pastor for Africa George Githembe said it was the best children’s activity of the year.
